In pursuit of His Majesty the King’s vision for quality water infrastructures, the Gelephu Thromde and Ministry of Infrastructure & Transport in partnership with the De-suung National Service executed the Gelephu Landmark Water Supply Project under Gelephu Thromde.

The Construction of the Project was launched on 22^nd April 2022 marking a significant milestone for the drinking water supply sector in Bhutan. At a cost of Nu. 373.00 million, the project has been completed and handed over to the beneficiaries and local governments, recently. The project was jointly financed by the Royal Government of Bhutan and Government of India through the Project Tied Assistance (PTA) Program.

The scope of works under the project included construction of new and climate resilient water supply infrastructures such as a robust intake structure at Bhalukhola water source; 3.7 km of 280mm dia HPDE raw water mainlines; 8.6 km of 250mm dia & 300 mm dia DI raw water mainline; 12 MLD capacity Water Treatment Plant, pipe bridges and 9.4 km of Distribution mainlines. Around 370 Desuups have been engaged during entire construction period. The Desuups have gained skills in carpentry, plumbing, pipe jointing, bar bending, traditional painting, masonry and electrical works

The project has ensured supply of sufficient clean and safe drinking water to 60000 residents of Gelephu Thromde, Gelephu and Samtelling gewogs, thus averting water woes which especially occurs in monsoon months.
